The Treacherous Waters of Rock of Ages Reef

Cumberland : The Cumberland was a Canadian side-wheeler built in 1871 in Port Robinson, Ontario for Perry & Co., Toronto.  This wooden passenger/freight side-wheeler was fitted out in elegant style to meet the expectations of the traveling public as she toured Lake Superior.  On July 24, 1877 while en route from Thunder Bay to Duluth, in a dense fog the Cumberland was driven hard on to the reef, which was unmarked on the Canadian charts.  Salvage tugs were unable to free her before an early fall storm broke her to pieces. The Cumberland became Isle Royale's first recognized major shipwreck.

In 1985 it was placed on National Register of Historic Places by the NPS Submerged Cultural Resource Unit.
