2008 Latest Diving and Boating Conditions

These are the conditions simply observed by divers and the captain on the charters as of the date listed.  Of course, conditions vary from site to site and sometimes day to day due to wind and currents mixing and moving the surface water.

Update Date:  August 25, 2008

Surface temperature: Surface temperatures were in the upper 50's to lower 60's on both ends of the island and the air temperatures warm and comfortable.   The thermocline seems to be around 30' now.  The warm surface water is moving around a lot so you can expect a lot of variability at any location.

Diving Visibility:  Visibility is below average for this time of year ranging around 20 - 25 feet.  You just don't add fourteen inches of water back into Lake Superior in a season without washing in a lot of silt.

Buoys : As of last weekend all buoys on the North End were out including the Congdon Stern.  All buoys were out on the south end now too.  We put jugs on the Algoma and the Glenlyon but the Algoma mooring line is only 1/2".  It was added to the normal mooring a few years ago by an unknown diver.  Thanks to Ralph of the RLT Diver for putting jugs on most all  of the wrecks to help the park service get the buoys on quicker this year.  We also put jugs on the Kamloops moorings -- both bow and stern.  The Tug in Five Finger Bay has a jug on it.

Boat Traffic : The boat traffic was higher than you would expect but tapering off now at the end of the season.  We didn't have any problem finding a dock.

Gasoline Price - Windigo was around $5.36 per gallon at Snug Harbor.   Grand Portage was $4.17 per gallon.  I guess we will be cruising slower to save fuel.

A Note on the low water - According to the NOAA web page, the water level is up about 14 inches over this time last year and only 5" below average.  Water depths are looking more normal now.
