Lafayette Site Description
Depth Range:
10-30 feet
to the bottom

The fragmented remains of the Lafayette lie scattered around Lafayette Bluff behind Encampment Island in 10 to 30 feet of water. Both ships were salvaged so there are no intact sections -- just scattered steel plates, pipes, and porcelain pieces. The point is private property so access is only by boat. As shipwrecks go this one is probably low on the list of interesting sites although it's shallow clear water makes it a fun place just to get wet. There is wreckage on both sides of the point, but the heaviest concentration seems to be off the tip of the point between the point and the island. Back in the 1970's there was an abundance of the puzzle-piece shaped tile in both white and blue colors. When we dove it in 2006, we were surprised to find only one piece left.
